Flow Cups

Flow cups, originally designed to perform quick viscosity and consistency evaluations of Newtonian or near non-Newtonian products, can provide a high degree of accuracy and repeatability depending on the quality of their manufacture.

Our flow cups are manufactured in accordance with International Standards which not only specify the close dimensional tolerances required during the process but also their use and recording of data obtained.

Cube Film Applicators

This small Applicator is available with 16 or 45 mm film widths (Applicator width respectively 25 and 50 mm). It has one chamber 16, 0 mm diameter to contain the liquid sample and 2 gap sizes (one on each side) machined into each application face, ideal for applying parallel film stripes.

SHBK3 Drying Time Recorders

The SHBK3 Drying Time Recorder is widely used in the coatings industry throughout the world. A needle carrier holding six hemispherical ended needles travels the length of the six 305 x 25 mm test strips in 6, 12 or 24 hours. Other speeds are available to special order. A time scale on the side cover is graduated to suit the three different travel times.

SHBK6 and SHBK10 Drying Time Recorders SHBK6 The SHBK6 and SHBK10 Recorders have independently operating tracks allowing tests to be made at different start times. Pairs of tracks operate at the same speed, and a wide range of travel times are available. The standard models are supplied with all tracks traversing at 12 hours, however, alternative combinations of speeds of 6, 12, 24 and 48 hours can be specified at the time of ordering. A time scale on the front cover is graduated to suit the instrument’s drying time ranges. Each pair of tracks has its own individual operating switch. Drying Stages Initially the needle passes through the film followed by defined stages in the drying process that can be identified as: The needle passes through the film, it recovers to leave no trace, progressing to a pear shape impression, corresponding with the evaporation of the solvent. Cutting of a continuous track corresponding to a sol-gel transition. The track depth is reducing and becomes interrupted corresponding to a tack-free surface-dry time. The needle no longer penetrates the film, corresponding to the final drying time. Brass weights (supplied as an accessory), each weighing 5 grams, may be used to apply greater pressure on the needles and thus record the through-drying properties of alkyds, varnishes and paints. The BK Drying Recorders will give useful information about the gelation times of many two component surface coating materials, and the properties of such films.   • These black and white charts are available in the a variety of sizes and patterns to meet the requirements of most popular tests such as hiding power, contrast ratio, colour etc. of paints, Inks, varnish and similar coating materials. Sealed Charts They are constructed of high quality paper based card, sealed and UV cured with solvent resistant lacquer, they are suitable for use with the majority of coating materials. Penetration Charts The uncoated versions are recommended where coatings of paints, varnishes, stains and sealants etc. are intended for application on porous surfaces, plasterboard, wood, bricks. Properties Some of the properties that can be determined by applying coatings to the charts, either visually and or by instrumentation include; Gloss, Opacity, Contrast ratios, Colour, Levelling, Sagging. Determination of Coating Properties Visual determination can be carried out under suitable lighting conditions (See SHCAC Light Booths) or where a more precise determination is required, suitable measuring instruments are available, Gloss Meters, (On coated charts) Opacity Meters, and colour measuring instruments, Spectromatch and Micromatch instruments. Method for Applying Coating Materials The charts should be placed on a firm flat surface, an Impression Bed (See above) or Automatic Film Applicator (See range above) or a suitable glass plate. Fluid materials can applied to the charts by the use of Bar Applicators, Wire-Bars, (See above) brushes, rollers and spray gun/can, (Own supply) Identification & Traceability Each individual chart and a cover sheet are identified with the product code and batch number. The top section of the charts have a printed legend for recording sample data; batch, date and time, also there is a 5 mm diameter hole positioned at the top for hanging the charts. Customised Charts Charts can be supplied in accordance with your specifications in either the same format but printed in less contrasting colours for testing coatings with lower hiding power, also alternative colours in place of black over white and other patterns.
